Psi Sigma Omega History

A group of Alpha Kappa Alpha women met in March 2009 to discuss establishing a chapter to serve the communities in Johnston County, North Carolina. They were enthusiastic to share the sorority’s vision to “make thee supreme in service to all mankind” in an area where Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was not present.

These women became sanctioned as a Pearls of Service Interest Group in October 2011. On June 8, 2013, the interest group was chartered and received its chapter letters – Psi Sigma Omega. Under the leadership of Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Dr. Linda H. Gilliam, the chapter was assigned to the Northern Carolina Cluster.

Psi Sigma Omega's mission is to provide service to all mankind engaging in community programs and initiatives that will foster sisterhood, scholarship, and service to embody the great legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha for years to come.

Psi Sigma Omega’s annual programs include a school supply drive, health and wellness resource fair, and ongoing reclamation and recruitment efforts. The chapter actively participates in programs and initiatives that improve socioeconomic conditions, promote and support education and outreach, and strengthen the communities in and around Johnston County, North Carolina.

In recognition of its commitment, the Board of Commissioners of Johnston County proclaimed June 8 as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Johnston County Chapter Day – the first such honor for a Greek-lettered organization in the county.
