Psi Sigma Omega History

A group of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ® held a meeting in March of 2009 to discuss the possibility of establishing a chapter to serve the communities in Johnston County, North Carolina where there was not a chapter of the Sorority. This was the vision of one member, but was brought to fruition by a group of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® that are dedicated and committed to continuing the legacy of sisterhood and service. These enthusiastic sisters were anxious to share AKA's vision to "make thee supreme in service to all mankind."

In October 2011, the group became sanctioned as the Pearls of Service Interest Group. With approval from the Regional Director, June 8, 2013 became the recommended date for the official charter.

On May 6, 2013, members presented Pearls of Service Interest Group to the Board of Commissioners of Johnston County. Following the presentation, the Board proclaimed June 8, 2013 as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ®, Johnston County Chapter Day throughout the County of Johnston, North Carolina. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® is the first Greek-letter organization to receive such a distinct honor in the county.

On June 8, 2013, the Pearls of Service Interest Group was chartered and given the official name of Psi Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Under the leadership of Dr. Linda H. Gilliam, Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, the chapter was assigned to the Northern Carolina Cluster.

Ongoing programs include the yearly School Supply Drive, Health and Wellness Resource Fair, Box Tops for Education, and recruitment activities to reclaim and reactivate inactive members in the service area. Under the auspices of its first President, Cynthia Giles, Psi Sigma Omega will continue to perform the work of  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® national signature programs as established by its current and future administration.

Psi Sigma Omega's mission is to provide service to all mankind engaging in community programs and initiatives that will foster sisterhood, scholarship and service to embody the great legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha for years to come.

To continue to meet the expectations of its mission, vision, and goals of Psi Sigma Omega will continue to actively provide and participate in service programs and initiatives that will improve the socioeconomic conditions, promote and support education and outreach, and strengthen the communities in and around Johnston County, North Carolina.
